Located inland in a rural mountain village about 19km (11.8 miles) south by road (about 10km as the crow flies) from the north coast town of Rethymno, this two bedroom old stone-built semidetached house was sympathetically renovated in 1995/96.  The house has character and many original features including: wooden beams, thick walls and stone arches.

he house has character and many original features including: wooden beams, thick walls and stone arches.

The property plot is 315m² (3,390ft²) and the house 160m² (1,722ft²) - including an apotheke (store room) of about 15m² (161ft²).

The house has oil fired central heating and an open fireplace in the living area.  With mostly half metre thick walls, and insulated ceilings, the house is warm in the winter and cool in summer.  Due to an elevation of about 440 metres (1,443ft) above sea level the climate is around 5 degrees cooler than on the north coast; a refreshing change to come home to after a trip to the beach in the hot summer months.

The village has two kaféneons and a taverna.  Mobile shops visit on a regular basis selling various items including fruit and veg, clothes and household essentials.

Journey time by car to Rethymno is around 25-35 minutes depending on time of day, how many sheep and goats are on the move and how often you stop to admire the fantastic views.

Off a steep narrow village street* the gated property entrance leads into a private tiled pathway, small front garden and terrace leading to the front door and small entrance hall.

*stopping at the gates for loading/unloading is fine, free parking is available in the village square about 40 metres away.

A door leads off the hall to the bathroom with large corner bath, Italian marble tiled walls and matching marble surround washbasin.  An open archway also leads off the hall into the main living space.

An ancient stone arch divides the 40m² (430ft²) main living space which includes an extremely efficient cast iron backed open fireplace.

From the kitchen, glazed double doors lead to steps down to a shady grape vine covered terrace and the small rear garden; a door off the terrace leads to the 15m² (161ft²) apotheke which contains the central heating boiler and oil tank.  In the apotheke there is also plumbing for a washing machine, electrics for a large fridge freezer and ample storage space remaining.

Apart from the heavily laden grape vine above the terrace, the garden has two other grape vines, a plum, lemon and pomegranate trees, roses and other shrubs/plants.

Connected to the main living space, up a few steps and along a short corridor, the 25m². (269ft²) main bedroom is also divided by an ancient stone arch and has an Italian marble tiled en suite shower, loo and matching marble surround washbasin.

Directly off the living space is a 15m² (161ft²) room with original wooden beams and a new wooden staircase going up to the second bedroom above.

Half way up the stairs is a glazed door leading to an external 15m² (161ft²) south facing terrace.  The glazed door provides natural light to both rooms; the bedroom above also has a window and a sloping open beamed ceiling that rises to about 4 metres at its peak.

Most of the above pictures were taken when the house was last occupied; apart from the kitchen, all other furniture shown is not included.

The house is connected to main sewerage (no cesspit to maintain).  All measurements are approximate and, as is the usual practice, include the thickness of the walls.
